Bible Commentary: Introduction to 1st and 2nd Chronicles

Chronicles was written around 400 B.C. by an unknown author (“the Chronicler”). After the people of Judah had returned to Jerusalem and rebuilt the temple & the city walls, questions remained about their place in God’s plan. To address these questions, the Chronicler retold the history of Israel, explaining their unfaithfulness as the cause of exile and their faithfulness as the way to renewal, while highlighting God’s maintenance of the messianic Davidic covenant (1 Chron 17:10-14) as the focus of hope for the future.
